Our Mission

epiENGAGE is a CDC-funded partnership involving over 20 research labs and public health departments across the United States. Our primary mission is developing powerful, science-based tools that enable public health and emergency response teams to detect, forecast, and manage outbreaks effectively. To ensure these tools are effectively used during critical situations, we also provide targeted training and interactive, game-based exercises to build intuition, improve data skills, and strengthen coordination. epiENGAGE’s work is empowering cities and counties nationwide to make faster, more informed decisions during public health emergencies.

Our Work

The next pandemic isn’t a question of if, but when. The epiENGAGE team—led by researchers from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Massachusetts Amherst—is putting powerful forecasting and disease analytics tools into the hands of local and state officials.

At the heart of this effort is the Hubverse, an open-source suite that streamlines infectious disease modeling, enabling experts to generate and communicate forecasts. This toolkit accelerates the translation of technological innovation into public health operations and has been a catalyst for forecasting science since 2022. Access to accurate, daily forecasts of outbreak activity empowers officials to act swiftly and effectively, saving lives.

Leveraging Hubverse technology, epiENGAGE will soon launch MetroCast—a city-level influenza forecast hub. With pilots in Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, San Antonio, and New York City already underway—and more cities to come—this tool will combine forecasts from the best modeling teams globally to support the management of seasonal epidemics and ensure rapid responses to novel influenza viruses.

epiENGAGE’s new technologies and boots-on-the-ground efforts to deliver them to local decision makers are turning data into action before the next crisis hits.
